A major benefit shake-up begins today with the first claims being made for a new universal credit payment. Those on benefit will see various benefits and tax credit merged into one monthly payout under universal credit.
The process begins in Ashton-under-Lyne in Greater in Manchester with a small number of new claimants, but will gradually affect an estimated 6 million people.
The system, which will heavily rely on computer system, will encourage online claims and is meant to simplify the welfare system by bringing a number of benefits together and reducing fraud and error.
It is for those looking for work and will replace income support, child tax credit, working tax credit and housing benefit, income-based jobseeker’s allowance, income-related employment and support allowance.
