Bournemouth University students will be collecting donations for their annual ‘big feed’ this weekend in an attempt to help struggling families in the town.
The event, organised by volunteers at Bournemouth University Student Union (SUBU) raised over four tonnes of food last year, a record they are hoping to beat.
The volunteers will split into six teams, each competing at a supermarket across the town aiming to collect donations from shoppers.
A recent study found 1 in 5 mothers skip meals to so they can afford to feed their children.
All food and money donated will be given to Trussell Trust Food banks across Bournemouth.
Organiser of the event and SUBU Volunteering Coordinator, Lexy Browning, says the big feed can have a big impact.
“The event is a fantastic example of the good work inspirational young people are capable of.
“It allows them to gain key skills which will be of use the them later in life, and most importantly, have fun!”
