For the past three years ‘Gardens Ice Rink’, an outdoors ice skating rink, has been opening from November 19th until January 3rd as part of the ‘Gardens Of Light’ festival in Bournemouth town centre which was launched in 2013.
‘Gardens Ice Rink’ is run by a company named Turbell who also have another outdoors ice skating rink in Hastings.
With lights, background music and huts to get food and drink from, there’s no reason not to enjoy some holiday fun on ice.
The amount of people on ice varies from day to day, Sam Flint who works at ‘Gardens Ice Rink’ said : “On a quiet day around 300 people and on a busy day it could be 1000 people”.
Seeing as the outdoors ice skating rink is only open for a short period of time, skaters don’t have much time to develop their skills on the ice. Sam Flint said : “Bournemouth could benefit from a permanent one”.
Bournemouth has been planning on building a permanent ice skating rink at King’s Park since 2010 due to the publics interest but still has no developper.
With so many more people going to the temporary ice skating rink each year, one of the worries with a permanent rink would be people no longer joining in on the Christmas fun at the outdoor rink.
Sam Flint said : “I don’t think it would affect it as much because it’s outside.
“People like to come to this one because it’s outside”.
It’s time to bring back a permanent ice skating rink in Bournemouth for the public to enjoy all year round.
