Small Business Saturday is an annual campaign that supports, inspires and promotes local business on the first Saturday of December and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ in order to help the economy of the community.
Small Business Saturday is an initiative first conceived and promoted by American Express in 2010 in the US, but reached the UK in 2013.
It is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big chain stores setting up huge sales and discounts both online and non.
Local authorities support of small businesses
Local authorities fully support the campaign as stated by the leader of Bournemouth Council, John Beesley that then added: ” Being a tourist town, Bournemouth’s independent retailers add that unique offer and specialism which sets them apart.
This is a great opportunity for small business and I would encourage residents to show their support and keep some of their Christmas shopping local this year”
This compaign is gaining more and more success every year, showing how there is still hope for small businesses to survive in this market despite the growing number of superstores.
