Thanks to my previous experience with videography and video editing, I was lucky enough to be asked to film the official music video for Little Giants newest single, We Start Fires.
The music video (above) was a project I was very eager to undertake, so I wanted to briefly discuss the process which I took in order to get what myself, Little Giants and their management wanted from the shoot.
The concept was simple, just a group of friends going camping, lighting fires, setting off fireworks and generally having a good time whilst I filmed what happened. No scripting, rehearsals or setups were used in the entirety of the shoot.
We wanted the video to feel organic and natural and put the viewer in the party with us. This meant I refrained from using drones or unnatural feeling shot types as I felt it would only detach the audience from what they were seeing.
The simplicity of the design is what I feel really makes the video work. It reflects the idea of letting go and enjoying yourself which draws a parallel with the lyric, “we start fires just to feel alive.” Most of the shots reflect the lyrics that are sung, although the viewer may not consciously realise this. This makes the song and video work together in a much greater way then the two elements being completely separate ideas simply placed together. Every shot in the video is there for a reason.
For those interested with the technical side, the main equipment I used was a Canon 70D with a Canon 16-35mm L Series lens. This was mounted on a Glidecam HD-2000 with a Rode VideoMic Pro on the camera.
