One of the bartenders in Walkabout gave her views on binge drinking amongst students and the problems that come with it. This is what Jess, 22, had to say on the topic.
Q: What is the preferred student drink?
A: Vodka and lemonade, something cheap and easy.
Q: Do you think alcohol consumption amongst students is excessive? What is the reason behind it?
A: More often than not, yes. Mostly peer pressure and expectations. Young people are expected to start a new life, find friends from scratch, become adults in the meantime and it can be daunting. They also need something to break the ice with all the new people around them.
Q: Do you think that the advertising around different events can pressure students into drinking more?
A: Yes, because it can be hard to stay home when all of your flat mates are off clubbing. Other than that media has started normalizing alcohol consumption much more recently, Buzzfeed constantly makes videos about drinking and being hungover and when you don’t “relate” you can feel a bit left out.
Q: Do you think university students consume more alcohol than their peers that don’t go into higher education?
A: Definitely. Many people actually start drinking when they go to university.
Q: How do you think the binge drinking epidemic can be stopped?
A: If people were to go to university at an older age I think they would have more experience and wouldn’t get to the extremes they go to at 18 or 19. Also, they have to be more confident in themselves and use their personality to talk to each other instead of letting the alcohol do the job.
