This is an interview with Emma Scott, treasurer of WAND.
Q: What is WAND (Women’s Action Network Dorset)?
A: Women’s Action Network Dorset (WAND) is an organization for women of all ages living, working or training in Dorset. The group was formed in response to an expressed need for a networking, campaigning and a social group for women, and now has a mailing list of around 400 women.
Q: What inspired you to start/join the organization?
A: Originally, I was working in a role which meant I supported the group as part of my work. When I changed jobs, I wanted to continue supporting and being involved with WAND and so have been volunteering with them for 18 months now. I am their official treasurer, but I help with all aspects of the group.
Q: Who does the organization aim to help and in what ways?
A: The group is open to any women, of all ages and backgrounds who live in Dorset. We aim to help women in a variety of ways – from helping them to feel less isolated to putting them in touch with agencies that can help them if they are living in a violent, dangerous environment.
Q: What are some of the other events which the organization holds annually?
A: The two key events the group is currently running are Reclaim the Night which takes place every November and Dorset Women’s Week, culminating in Dorset Women’s Day which happens on the Saturday closest to International Women’s Day in March every year.
