The time to make it as a footballer is now.
The Premier League has the biggest audience in the world and the biggest reward. This season for the first time the average wage of a premier league player surpassed the £50,000 a week mark. Make it as a footballer and you’re set for life, that’s the dream.
However, what happens to the players that dream of this goal, and what impact does it have on them?
There are currently 1.5 million boys playing organised youth football within England, they will then filter down into the most elite 12,000 boys who will play in professional academies.
Then from that 1.5 million figure an astonishing reduction happens, only 180 will make it into the top flight and play in the Premier League.
So what does this do to the other 99.88% who dream of making it in the big time? What mental consequences are there for a life under pressure 7 days a week at a professional academy. What does rejection do to the mind, how do players take it?
Find out the current state of the game, and how important awareness of mental health is within the academy system.
