The journey was completed by brothers Tim and Matt Dyton (18 and 24) on the ‘Smiler’, a £2000 sailing yacht from July 12th to October 30th 2019.
The pair travelled through France and towards the Balearic islands. At times they sailed with no engine, and even sailed “24 hours from Barcelona to Mallorca”
“We thought it would be a challenge, and a good way to travel.” Said Tim Dyton.
The duo released an episodic YouTube series documenting their experience on the ‘Smiler’ YouTube channel. At the time of writing the channel has amassed over 30 thousand views online.
The journey had some issues however. Tim said: “We were at a mooring point, a week before the end, and we just drifted onto rocks.
“We were just getting smashed on the rocks but luckily a rib came and dragged us out before any proper damage happened.”
“I’ve been around boats most of my life, but all in all I wouldn’t say I’ve sailed for that long. Neither of us would say we actually like sailing that much” said Tim.
At the end of the journey, the pair sold the sailing yacht to an American couple living in Alicante. Tim said at times he “regrets the decision” when he sees the boat being sailed by the couple on social media.
