Drug driver jailed following serious collision in Bournemouth

A man has been jailed after a road traffic collision in Bournemouth that left a pedestrian with life-changing injuries.

Richard Dean Caines, 47 from Bournemouth has been sentenced to two years and ten months in prison at Bournemouth crown court on friday the 20th of January after pleading guilty previously to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving a motor vehicle while unfit through drugs, driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence and using a motor vehicle on a road without third party insurance.

He has also been disqualified from driving for six years and five months.

Dorset police received a report a report at 11:19am on Tuesday 8th November 2022 of a collision between a white Nissan Micra and a pedestrian in Poole Road, Westbourne.

A woman aged in her 50s was the pedestrian involved sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The nissan driven by Caines was seen overtaking two vehicles before colliding with the victim on the wrong side of the road.

Police Sergeant Gareth Thomas, of the traffic unit, said: “The dangerous actions of Richard Caines have sadly resulted in a woman suffering long lasting impact.

“It is entirely unacceptable to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while under the influence of drugs as it poses a risk to motorists, as well as members of the public in the wider area.

“We will continue to pursue anyone who drives dangerously and will do all we can to ensure they face the consequences of their actions.”
