Illegal migration minister and MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole Michael Tomlinson made viewers cringe as he discussed his love for sport whilst forgetting which football team he supports.

In a sit down interview with Sky’s Kay Burley on Wednesday morning the 46 year old stuttered when questioned about which football club he supported.

“I’ve been to Bournemouth and various other grounds but I don’t have a specific football team” Mr Tomlinson started.

As Ms Burley continued Michael suddenly interrupted with “Wimborne Town Football Club, there we go!”

When questioned if he knew the score of the Magpies last game the minister replied “I couldn’t tell you their last result”

“The last time I was there lots of goals were scored and it was a 1-1 draw” he then continued which prompted laughter from the interviewer.

In response to the embarrassing blunder, Wimborne Town FC’s official X account posted a response in a post quipping “not @Michael4MDNP finest interview but we appreciate the shoutout from our local MP!”

Cricket fan Mr Tomlinson made an appearance for Herefordshire county cricket club in his youth in 1997 in a victory against Dorset County.

Mr Tomlinson received his current title as Illegal migration minister last month after the resignation of Robert Jenrick and was discussing the Prime Minister’s Rwanda plan regarding migration in the UK.

The minister is currently MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole under the conservative party a title he has held since 2015’s general election.
