England manager Thomas Tuchel’s appointment has caused a lot of controversy in the media this week – but what do Bournemouth University students think?
The 51-year-old German was appointed on Wednesday following Gareth Southgate’s resignation after the EURO final defeat to Spain in July.
The main talking point is over Tuchel’s nationality as many people believe that the England manager should be English.
Despite this, fans on Bournemouth University’s Talbot Campus have voiced their support of Tuchel.
Joe Robinson, 20, said: “There is a lot of talk about him not being English but I don’t think that’s a bad thing.”
James Harfield, 19, added: “Tuchel has an excellent CV and with the squad we have we can really get the best out of the players.”
Many other names were in the running for the England job, such as former Chelsea boss, Graham Potter, and ex-AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe.
Joe Van der Velden, 19, said: “Out of the current crop of players that England could have got he [Tuchel] was the best option.”
A number of ex English professional footballers have questioned the decision to not have an English manager.
On The Overlap podcast, ex Liverpool player, Jamie Carragher, said: “I think it is embarrassing that as a nation we are saying we need a foreign coach to make us successful.”
Match of the Day presenter, Gary Lineker, agreed.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, he said: “I would’ve given it [the England job] to Lee Carsley… I believe that in national team football, particularly the big nations, I believe the manager should be from that country.”
Tuchel does not officially take over management duties until 1 January 2025 so his first game in charge of the national team will be in March 2025.
