England made history in their first innings against Pakistan as they became the first team to win a match by an innings after conceding more than 500 runs in the first innings.
Despite stand in captain Ollie Pope being bowled for zero, England still comfortably got the job done, putting up an impressive 823, the fourth highest total in test cricket history.
Pope said: “The way we’ve gone about taking the 10 wickets, then Harry Brook and Joe Root putting us in a position where we have a chance of winning a game where we’ve conceded 500 runs, is very pleasing.”
The match saw record-breaker Joe Root score his highest Test score, racking up 262 from 375 balls, overtaking Sir Alastair Cook as English highest ever test run scorer.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan praised Root: “His idea of bad form is averaging 35 for a few games because he is only ever a week away from getting a score.
“He is impervious to major losses of form because his defence is so good, and he has so many ways of scoring. His mindset is attacking, but it is all built on the foundations of a strong defence.”
England will be looking to wrap up the series next week, with the second Test commencing on the 15th of October.
They will be hoping that on-form batsmen Brook and Root can get anywhere near to their partnership of 454 from the first Test.
