England women look to do double over rivals Germany

England women will look to continue their superb run of form when they face rivals Germany in a friendly at Wembley tonight.

This is the first time both sides will face each other since the Euro 2022 final, where the Lionesses ran out 2-1 winners in extra time to lift their first major trophy in international football.

Head coach Sarina Wiegman has a selection headache ahead of the game, however, with multiple players in line to make the starting XI.

But Chloe Kelly, Beth Mead and Fran Kirby are among the big names to have fallen down the pecking order, much to the surprise of a women’s football expert.

“Both Kelly and Mead are players that have had supreme moments for the Lionesses, but their respective club form is hampering them,” Finley Chung told Buzz News.

“When you look at someone like Fran Kirby, who has been given a new lease of life at Brighton, how can you look past her?”

Chung has tipped England as the favourites but Germany’s displays since the Olympics mean they will pose a stern test for Wiegman’s side.

Germany striker Alexandra Popp, who will retire from international football at the end of the month, will miss out at Wembley but is set to return for her final appearance against Australia.

Peter Weis, a German expert, said: “Naturally, none of our current players can hope to replace Popp on a like-for-like basis.”
