Hamworthy United manager Dan Cann has been hailed as “warrior-like” following his Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis.

The 38-year-old was diagnosed with the degenerative condition in August but is balancing his coaching duties alongside his treatment.

Cann, who featured for several clubs in the Bournemouth area during his playing career, took charge at the County Ground in October 2022.

Club director Andy James has praised the coach for his bravery and vowed the Hammers will continue to stand by him.

“His incredible determination will help him in every way to get through the battle,” James said.

“We will support him every step of the way and whatever decisions he makes, we will support.”

A charity game in support of Cann between Hamworthy United Legends and Poole Town Legends was held in September.

A number of local figures, including Harry Redknapp and local boxer Chris Billam-Smith, were spotted among a record-breaking crowd of 1,500 at the County Ground.

“It blew us all away, it just goes to show the love and support of the whole community, it was amazing,” James added.

Poole Town captain Jamie Whisken set up a GoFundMe page for Cann’s end of life care and raised an incredible £15,000 in 24 hours.

The effort has now reached over £64,000.

Whisken said: “The local community have been and continue to be incredible, Dan’s surrounded by so many good people, and I know he’s so appreciative of them all.

“Knowing how much all this will help Dan and his family over coming months is quite heart-warming.”
