A Lymington boxer is prepared for his toughest test ahead of the National Development Semi-Finals this weekend.
Lawrence Boxing Club’s Rhys Black, 18, will be fighting in Northampton tomorrow after his victory in the u57kg quarter-finals last week.
Black beat a tournament favourite, Toks Rowaiye from Islington Boxing Club, London, last weekend in Tenterden, Kent.
The fight went to the judges’ decision and Black was crowned the winner after a dominant showing, having controlled the bout from bell to bell.
Black said: “I feel confident. It’s great to have got this far but it’s business as usual on Saturday.”
A two-time Southern Counties champion, Black is a highly experienced boxer with 21 amateur bouts on his record and has competed since he was 11.
Lawrence Boxing Club’s head coach Ross Clark has worked with Black since he started boxing and has witnessed his progression first-hand.
Clark said: “Rhys has always been a hard worker in the gym, and he’s grabbed the biggest achievement for this club getting this far.”
Black’s next opponent will be Camaron Nicholson, boxing out of Church Amateur Boxing Club from Maldon, Essex.
The semi-finals will take place in Kettering, Northampton at Arena Sports leisure facility with the finals to get underway on Sunday.
