AFC Stoneham prepare for Wincanton clash

After Tuesday’s 3-1 win at home to Blackfield & Langley, AFC Stoneham are looking to continue their recent imperious run of form on Saturday as they welcome Wincanton Town to the Stoneham Lane Sports Complex.

The win, which saw top scorer Duarte Martins bag a brace, extended the Purps’ unbeaten run to 24 games across league and cup, extending back to a 3-4 defeat on penalties against Sherborne Town on the 8th October 2024.

They currently sit 3rd in the Velocity Wessex Premier Division, 11 points behind league leaders AFC Portchester – but with three games in hand.

This is in contrast to Saturday’s opponents, who currently sit 16th in the table, eight points clear of the relegation zone.

They do, however, come into the match on a high, after defeating Bournemouth FC 4-0 last weekend at the Wincanton Sports Ground, having lost 2-7 in the reverse earlier this season.

When the two sides met in league action in the reverse fixture, it was James Phillips’ Stoneham who left the happier team, winning 5-2 on that occasion.

Looking ahead to this weekend after their midweek win, Phillips said:

“They want to win every game of football, and they always prepare right.

We drive the standards really really high, and we warn them about conceding goals like we did today.

Overall, we’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing.

Obviously we’re on a 24 match unbeaten run now – it’s phenomenal, but we’ve just got to try and keep the boys on track.”

The Velocity Wessex Premier Division clash kicks off at 3pm on Saturday 25th January 2025.
