Boscombe community space campaigns for funding

January 30, 2025 //  by Ashleigh Cullis

The Windmill Wellness hub in Boscombe is raising money to complete its event space in the sovereign centre.

The community space is for disabled children, their families and carers. The centre hosts disability friendly events as well as providing a range of therapies and counselling.

The manager of the Windmill Wellness hub, Aggie Mackenzie Brown said, “the only thing we need now is heating”.

“The little ones need warmth to keep them happy and cosy…we have children who can’t regulate their own body temperature and children who are in wheelchairs that can’t get up and run around to warm up…just having a comfortable temperature here makes it more welcoming”.

The wellness hub officially opened just before Christmas, however Aggie had been running sessions for children from various halls and events spaces since September.

“All the support we’ve had has come from generosity, this was all made possible by volunteers and local trades people.

“We haven’t got any help from the council, the local authority is in a deficit, so everything is funded by us, special needs is not being funded adequately”

She continued, “So, we’ve set up a just giving page to help, if we don’t get the money for the heating we will have to use fan heaters, so it’ll be slower, and fan heaters are not a cheap option”.

There are currently 600 children on the books for the wellness hub at the moment.

They’re open to any children with special needs or lifelong diagnoses as well as all parents and carers.

Aggie expressed the need for this in the community especially for parents.

“you can lose your own friendship circle because people don’t understand how to deal with children with different needs, so you find a new bubble of friends and that support is brilliant, so now I’m 10 years down the road I can help other parents”.

She continued “Just being able to have a space here whether it’s for a chat, a cry or a cake is vital”.
