Company behind the Canford Incinerator defend their planning proposal

A German company are awaiting a decision from the Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole council on planning permissions to build an Incinerator on Magna Road.

If the plans from MMVUK are passed by BCP Council, it will be the third planned Incinerator in Dorset, the other two in Portland and West Parley. The West Parley incinerator was granted permission in December of 2022.

However these plans have been met with protests from both the public and environmental groups: Extinction rebellion Bournemouth and Christchurch and Extinction rebellion Wimborne. The latest of which was outside BCP civic centre as they held their planning meeting last Thursday.

The Environmental groups are arguing that the fumes from the incinerator will be damaging to the general public’s health.

“Incineration is now recognised to be the most dirty and polluting form of energy generation since the coal mines were shut down,” said Joanna Bury, Head of Extinction Rebellion Wimborne.

The group has claimed on their Facebook group that it will be a “disaster for human health and the environment”.

MVV have defended their proposal saying: “We have submitted our application for the Canford project to BCP Council and are looking forward to receiving confirmation of a date of the planning committee meeting at which they will determine their decision. We are confident that our proposals are compliant with all relevant standards and policies at local and national level.”

The next meeting where the proposal could be debated is on the 6th February at 10am. Both extinction rebellion groups are planning to protest once again outside the Civic Centre until the proposal is decided on.
