The Young Birders Club, developed by Dorset charity Birds of Poole Harbour aims to combat the biodiversity crisis in the UK by drawing attention to the role that Poole Harbour plays in the restoration of the ecosystem.
The project is funded by the Cameron Bespolka Trust, set up in the memory of young naturalist who died in a tragic accident aged 16.
Poole Harbour has been recognised as a Special Protection Area (SPA) and has also been classed as a RAMSAR site. This indicates that it is home to significant populations of a wide variety of bird species both domestically and abroad.
A spokesperson for Birds of Poole Harbour spoke to Buzz News reporter Jasmine Baker:
“We are going to be aiming to engage and inspire local young people, between 13 to 18 year olds, all about the fantastic birds, wildlife and conservation work that we’ve got locally.”
Birds of Poole Harbour raises money to fund conservation projects across the region, whilst also providing unique learning experiences to a wide audience including local schools, enthusiastic locals, and curious visitors.
Some of the local conservation projects include nature restoration and the reintroduction of animals which will all take place during free monthly events.
