Flood alert issued at Christchurch Harbour

January 30, 2025 //  by Matty Krupa

The floodgates in Christchurch have been closed and have been secured due to concerns that elevated tides may lead to flooding.

The peak tide level is anticipated to occur at Christchurch Harbour, as well as the tidal sections of the Lower Stour and Avon, at 9:45 AM today. Additionally, another high tide is expected at 10:29 AM on Friday, January 31.

Flooding could happen two hours either side.

Currently a flood warning is in force at the Lower Stour from Sturminster Marshall to Christchurch.

Regions that are particularly vulnerable encompass agricultural lands in Sturminster Marshall, Cowgrove, retail establishments in Wimborne, Mill Street in Corfe Mullen, the Bridge House Hotel in Ferndown, Brecon Close, Ringwood Road, Throop Road in Bournemouth, as well as Barrack Road and Willow Way in Christchurch.

Authorities have urged people to stay away from using low lying footpaths and bridges near the water to. not put themselves in risk.

On Tuesday, residents of Iford Bridge Caravan Park were evacuated, this is the second time within in recent months, due to risk of flooding.

The Met Office forecast indicates that there will be no rain today; however, significant rainfall is anticipated during the early hours of Friday morning.

Drier spells are expected at the end of the week.

In case of support, please dial Dorset floodline 0345 988 1188 or in case of emergency please dial 999.
