Darren - Dorset's metal detecting superhero

Darren Wiles, a metal detector from Dorset aids residents in locating their lost belongings.

For over a decade, Mr Wiles has been searching the lands of Dorset, uncovering its hidden secrets and helping people find their much-loved belongings.

He began his love for metal detecting in 2009 and has devoted much of his time to this craft.

“It all started with the odd request from other people and then as time went on, I decided to create a website for the service.” Mr Wiles said.

He went on to share how busy his makeshift business has become.

This new found popularity resulted in Mr Wiles creating the Bournemouth Detecting Club in 2011.

But why start this new love? What made him pursue it in the first place.

“It all started with my love for history.” He said.

“I used to go out into the farms in the northern part of Dorset and used to find Roman coins and old medieval currency, which was always interesting to collect.” He added.

This job is no easy feat.

“I go out multiple times a week, most of the time one in the morning.” He said.

“I plan the searches early in the morning most times so that it doesn’t affect my own family life.” He explained.

The work Darren has done locating residents’ belongings has resulted in him becoming something of a legend in the area.

“The things I find are usually more on the expensive side, but it is never about the price, it is all about the sentimental value of the item.”

“It doesn’t matter if it is a £1 ring from new look to a £15,000 ring, if it is important to them, it is important to me.” He said.

Mr Wiles is continuing his work in the Dorset area, with the hope of solving further mysteries.
