Albert Grønbæk has been announced by Southampton, signing for the club on loan with an option to buy.

The 23-year-old leaves previous club Rennes halfway through his first season with the club, with 16 appearances and three goal contributions to his name as well as two appearances in the French Cup.

The midfielder has also featured six times for the Denmark national team and has scored one goal.

Grønbæk has previously spent time at AGF Aarhus where he started his career, as well as Norwegian title holders Bodø/Glimt where he featured 87 times and scored 29 goals.

The option to buy for the Dane is a 15 million euros fee, with the central midfielders move likely to impact the future of young Northern Irishman Shea Charles who has recently been recalled to the club.

Buzz News reporter Will Lacey spoke to Norwegian football expert Jonas Giæver, who believes the signing could be exciting for the South Coast side.

“If he carries on the form he had in Norway, Southampton fans have a lot to be excited about.”

“He is a player who contributes a lot offensively and presses high to win possession back for his team.”

Southampton fan and owner of Southampton FC fan page thesaintregion Isaac Rodgers is excited about the signing, but apprehensive due to how well known the player is.

“I think the signing is a move that Saints fans will be unsure on wether is a positive or negative move as he is not a globally well known name.”

“Quite a few Rennes fans are dissapointed he is moving on so that is a positive sign of what he could offer for us.”

Saints boss Ivan Juric will be looking to bolster his side further in the rest of the transfer window in their unlikely bid for survival.
