Success for Britain in Australian Open first round

January 14, 2025 //  by Suranne Tyley

Today at the Australian Open, British star Emma Raducanu faced 26th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, managing to win in two sets, both of which went to a tiebreak.

In the next round, the 22-year-old is set to face Amanda Anisimova who is ranked 35th in the world, recently returning to the sport after a mental health break in 2023.

Harriet Dart also saw success in her first-round match against Jana Fett, winning the final set in a 10-7 tiebreak.

Dart, who got into the main draw through qualifying, meets 18th seed Donna Vekic next, the pair last faced each other in 2022 with Dart winning in straight sets.

On Thursday, Dart faces fellow Briton Heather Watson in the women’s doubles.

Kingston upon Thames’ Jodie Burrage fought back tears as she won her first ever Australian Open match, in straight sets against Leolia Jeanjean.

The Brit now faces third seed Coco Gauff in the second round after the American beat Sofia Kenin comfortably.

British number one Katie Boulter is also through to the second round, beating Rebecca Marino in three sets today.

On the men’s side of the draw, Cameron Norrie bowed out in the first round, losing in four sets to Italian Matteo Berretini.

British number one Jack Draper survived an exhausting five set thriller against Mariano Navone yesterday.

The 23-year-old is set to face Adelaide’s Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round, Draper will be expecting a hostile crowd heading into this matchup.

Jacob Fearnley shocked the world after knocking out Nick Kyrgios in the first round in straight sets, with the Australian hinting at retirement after the defeat.

The women’s Australian Open final will be played on Saturday 25th January and the men’s will be played on Sunday 26th January.
