Free walk-in meningitis vaccinations were offered to students registered at the Talbot House medical centre at Bournemouth University.
Meningitis has been more prominent in the last few weeks, and has been flagged up on BBC news over the past couple of days, with the government having given a list of symptoms to look out for.
Students have been made aware of the symptoms in response to this national awareness and have been told to avoid mistaking meningitis for freshers’ flu or a common cold.
Symptoms include: severe headaches, stiff neck, dislike for bright lights, confusion, a rash that doesn’t fade and nausea.
Bournemouth University have responded to this by offering free walk in vaccinations for students who have not received a booster or a vaccine for meningitis.
A receptionist at Talbot House said, “We had a full turnout all the vaccines we had ordered were used meaning we’ve had to order more for those that were unable to get vaccinated this week.”
The walk in services were open from 9:00 this morning to 1:00 this afternoon, on Friday the 31st of October.
Those who were unable to get vaccinated this week will still have the opportunity but will have to wait until next week.
In the meantime, the university and staff have recommended that students check for any symptoms that may show signs of meningitis.
