The FA Trophy: Wimborne Town’s Wembley wish

With the FA Trophy now well underway, talk is starting to brew about who may be in with a shot at a visit to Wembley this year. But some have had experience at ‘The Home of Football’ in the past.

This includes local side Wimborne Town, who in 1992 won the FA Vase, beating Guiseley 5-3 in the final and being crowned champions at Wembley Stadium.

The Magpies face the test of AFC Portchester this weekend in the First Round proper, after a 2-0 victory to Dorset rivals, Weymouth, in the last Qualifying Round.

They go into the fixture off the back of a 2-0 win, to yet another Dorset rival in Dorchester Town.

Dorchester are still in the FA Trophy as well, travelling to Basingstoke Town.

Poole Town are also still competing, and will be taking on Plymouth Parkway.

This also means three of four Dorset sides, excluding Weymouth, in the Southern Premier South will be battling it out this weekend in the FA Trophy.

The highest level of opponents being National League outfits, and Wimborne already having experience beating National League South opponents this year, what’s to stop the magpies from dreaming big?

While maybe not as prestigious as the infamous FA Cup, the FA Trophy is still a huge opportunity for non-league and National League clubs to take part and perform at the very highest stage and grow their reputation.

For many football fans, all the travelling, all of the time, and those painful Saturday evenings after a rough loss to your rival becomes all worth it when there is silverware on the line, as well as a trip to Wembley.

It will take a lot to overcome higher opposition time and time again, but the Magpies are in confident form.

If all things go there way, it could be a first trip to Wembley for Wimborne since 1992.

As they say, anything can happen in the cup, so why not believe it can be your year?
