A Bournemouth University masters graduate has set up a community for women to come together and make friends after sharing her story about post-uni depression.
Alanis Sibley-Ware, who attended Cardiff University, shared how moving back home after 3 years was a shock to the system.
She said : “Going from living with 5-8 people and living in your own way for three years to moving back to your childhood bedroom is a strange feeling.”
She added : “Once i graduated from my masters my routine really changed…it suddenly felt like i had a lot of space to fill with not much to fill it with.”
In a recent UCL survey it was found 20% of people apply for a ‘panic masters’ after finishing their undergraduate degree.
Many others as well as Alanis found that doing a masters really softens the blow as there’s still a social element, like university.
Alanis opened up about how she was feeling post- university on social media.
She said : “I posted a TikTok asking if anyone else felt the same way and would want to meet for a coffee, thats when all the messages came through and i realised just how many people were struggling with the same feeling.”
In a ‘City Mental Health’ study it was found that out of the 300 students interviewed, 49% admitted to a decline in their mental wellbeing post-university.
Alanis hopes to raise awareness and support people who are feeling lonely through her group ‘The Girl collective BCP’.
She added: “I think this group is proof that talking about things like loneliness and how we feel is so important.”
The Girl Collective BCP is holding its first event next Saturday for a yoga class and coffee afterwards.
