Gavin and Stacey actor Larry Lamb recalled his favourite moments from filming the hit BBC sitcom when he visited Bournemouth University today.
He was on the university’s Talbot campus as part of his UK tour for his upcoming book All Wrapped Up, where he’s completing a book signing as well as taking time to speak to students and the media production teams.
He described the book as “a tribute to all those people I have worked with over the years.”
Lamb spoke about moments on the different sets he has worked on and how they influenced his novel, including his time on Gavin and Stacey.
He was delighted about the iconic moment when Mick stood up in the finale: “Alison Steadman and I, as we are getting older, can forget our lines, so they gave me a scene where I stood up and didn’t say anything.”
He also shared his experiences away from the set with his fellow actors: “We were all away from home, staying in the same hotel. There was a line of these imitation fireplaces with gas log fires and sofas around them.”
This, he explained, played a big part in bringing the cast together: “[It] became known as Pam’s parlour. That’s where we became a family.”
Despite the actors camaraderie, Larry’s book focuses on the hard work and dedication of the crew on set.
He stated that when he isn’t working it is the crew that he misses, “they’re just regular people who do jobs, they get up very early every morning, and they work till late every night.”
He emphasised the importance of having a team behind the scenes, and the vital jobs they play, “your day is the same but it stays the same because it’s all controlled by the crew.”
Lamb wants his readers to understand the reality of working on a set. He said: “They [ the public] think of red carpets, and champagne, and parties, and stars and all that, but it’s not about that.”
This is what he really inspired him to dedicate the book to the crews because “they become your family on every job you go on. […] If you’re interested in being a part of their little family, or a big family, it’s easy to become that, and that’s what I really like.”
Larry Lamb has half of his tour left to complete, with the final destination being Barry Island to bring back in a full circle.
He has aspirations to bring out a book of poetry in the new year as he has had a love for poetry since 1983.
“I’m going to just go around the country and be a poet.”
