Winton resident ‘annoyed’ over proposed 20mph speed limit

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council have proposed a 20mph speed limit to cover Winton and its surrounding areas.

The aim is to improve road safety following a rise in the number of collisions.

Winton has the highest number of road accidents across the BCP region, with 217 casualties between 2013 and 2019.

And just in July 2024 alone, 96 people sustained minor injures due to car accidents around the Dorset area.

The limit would be implemented in Winton, Moordown, Charminster and Talbot Woods.

The council aims to improve safety around eleven school areas, while also encouraging walking and cycling.

One Bournemouth resident said, “I commute from Winton to Christchurch a lot, and the high street is hard enough to drive down.”

He continued, “I’m annoyed that there’s now going to be an even tighter speed limit; pulling onto the high street is going to be almost impossible.”

The consultation for the plan opened on the 10th of October 2025 and closes on the 7th of November 2025.

With the proposal facing backlash from residents, many have suggested that the council enforce these limits in areas surrounding schools only.

One resident said, “I don’t drive, but it is hard enough to walk around the area because of the number of cars. I think this will work well.”

The scheme is being funded by BCP Council after a grant was allocated, meaning it will not be funded via resident council tax.

The existing speed limit in the built-up areas of Winton is 30mph, and a date for this to be lowered has not yet been confirmed.
