Poole Lighthouse terrified audiences this week by welcoming Shock Horror: A Ghost Story to its theatre, for one night only.
Set in the rotting remains of The Metropol Cinema, it was a tribute to those of us who somehow saw the classic late 70’s/early 80’s horror movies, long before we should have.
Multiple references were made to the early works of Wes Craven and John Carpenter, there were direct influences of The Shining and The Exorcist, and other classics such as Psycho and Hellraiser.
The story follows Herbert, who grew up in the cinema with an alcoholic father and schizophrenic mother.
Through a mixture of live performance and on-screen memories we learn about the dark past of The Metropol, and its inhabitants.
Writer Director Ryan Simons does an excellent job of reminding us all how it felt to be alone in the dark, at the mercy of masters of their craft.
