’16 cup finals left’: Bashley’s fight for survival

Bashley’s fight for survival in the Southern League begins tomorrow afternoon where they face an out of form Westbury United side at Meadow Lane.

After a disappointing first half campaign the New Forest side find themselves sitting 21st in the Southern League Division One South, 6 points a drift from safety.

A win for Bashley could see them half that gap, building up some momentum going into the final stretch of the season.

Manager Jack Williamson, said: ‘We’ve got nothing to lose, we are fortunate now that we’ve started to settle the squad at the right time heading into this crucial period.’

‘We’ve got 16 cup finals left to stay in this league and each game really is a six pointer for us, but we are taking it one game at a time and not getting drawn into all the talk around it.’

The reverse fixture in late September ended in a goal less draw at the Veho Community Stadium.

Since then Bashley have only won two league games, whilst tenth placed Westbury United have won an impressive nine.

Despite Bashley’s poor league position this season, their support from the fans hasn’t gone unnoticed by the squad.

Williamson said: ‘You see it at the top level with fans screaming for the manager to be sacked, yet all I’ve got is support which is amazing and on a personal level I can’t thank them enough.’

‘I want them to almost suck the ball into the net, they are going to be so important for us both home and away over these remaining games and we need each and every one of them,’ said Williamson.

Despite their torrid league form, Bashley’s cup form has been the standout of their season so far, with a semi final looming over them.

A strong 2-0 home performance saw Bashley defeat Sporting Wessex midweek in the quarter finals of the Southampton Senior Cup, just one win away from a final at St Mary’s Stadium.

The club will be hoping to convert their cup success into league victories if they are going to continue in the Southern League next season.
