AFC Bournemouth U21’s beat Sheffield United away from home, 2-1, last night in the PL Cup.

This is the first time in Cherries’ history that the squad has reached the last eight stage of the cup, and they got there by beating a Sheffield side who topped their group winning six games out of six.

Eugene Nyarko scored in both halves to give the Cherries a 2-0 lead before The Blades, Aaron Reid, had a deflected effort go in late on, proving only to be a consolation goal.

Nyarko’s first goal came just 12 minutes in with a diving header at the back post before he followed in a rebounded shot in the 78th minute to double their advantage.

He also netted twice in their last fixture against Reading in the final game of the PL Cup group.

U21’s boss Alan Connell said to afcb.co.uk: “It was a great night for everyone involved. I thought our performance merited going through to the next round against a very strong Sheffield United side.”

This historic game also saw more minutes for 19-year-old defender Matai Akinmboni, who’s recovering from a recent muscle injury.

The Cherries fans also saw a first appearance in nearly four months for forward Jonny Day, who’s been out through injury.

“It was great to get more minutes for Matai Akinmboni and Jonny Day’s return to action the first time since the end of September,” said Connell.

The Cherries will be hoping to continue making history and progressing further in the cup, but first, they look to their Premier League 2 game against Cardiff next Monday.
