Today is national bagel day, Bournemouth bagel shop ‘Bagels by Soho’ is celebrating.

Bagels by Soho is one of the few bagel shops in Bournemouth. It is located in Lansdowne Holdenhurst road.

Bagels by Soho chef, Cam Sing said: “I love bagels, I eat and make them everyday.”

Bagels are made using a standard yeast dough. They are proved and then boiled before getting put in the oven with an egg wash and any seeds.

Mr. Sing said: “He (the owner) saw a gap in the market. When you go to London you see loads of bagel shops, but there aren’t any here in Bournemouth.”

Bagels by soho is looking to expand the types of bagels they offer.

Mr. Sing said: “They’re specialty bagels (everything and poppy) that we get sent in from New York. I think theres 20 options we can pick from. We’ve just had our supplier in and he brought over some jalapeƱo flavored ones.”

Maria Balinska wrote the book “The Bagel: The Surprising History of a Modest Bread”

Bagels have have been traced back to the 13th century, made by Jewish bakers in Poland. During this time anti-semitic laws were in place to segregate Jewish people. However, Jewish bakers were given the leeway to bake for both Jewish and Christians. The top seller was a boiled ring-shaped bread known as obwarzanek.
