A train has crashed in Thailand killing 32 people and left over 60 injured.
The incident occurred when a crane collapsed onto the vehicle that was travelling from Bangkok to the Northeast region of Ubon Ratchathani.
The train, which derailed at around 9:00 local time on Wednesday morning, was carrying 171 passengers at the time.
Thai news outlet ‘The Nation’ reported that the crane collapsed whilst carrying large sections of concrete.
The concrete crashed into the train crushing them and causing some to derail.
The entire incident reportedly took place in the space of 1 minute.
Eyewitnesses described the horror of the scene that caused injuries to passengers as young as one year old and as old as 85.
They described to reporters how the crane was able to derail the carriage that held a variety of passengers from school children, to work commuters.
“The crane fell onto the roof of the train, then the train dragged the crane along, causing the carriage to be torn off the tracks” they said.
Thailand’s Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, who will visit the scene of the wreckage later on Wednesday said that those responsible need to be held accountable.
He said: “Accidents only happen due to negligence…”
The Thai Minister for transport, Suriya Juangroongruangkit, who was at the scene, expressed his support for those who were impacted by the crash.
“I wish to express condolences to everyone who has suffered from injury or death because of this incident,” he said.
The State Railway of Thailand has announced that it will sue the company in charge of the section: Bangkok-Nong Khai HSR Development for Regional Connectivity.
The cost of the damages to the train carriages are estimated to be over 100 Million Baht which is around 23 million pounds.
The crane was part of the development of a high-speed rail project that links China to Thailand.
The State Railway has announced that it will also launch an investigation into the incident.
