Dame Sarah Mullally DBE, who holds an honorary doctorate from Bournemouth University, became the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury earlier today.
She is the first female archbishop in 1,400 years.
Mullally was awarded the honour’s doctorate for nursing and midwifery in 2004.
Mullally underwent her Confirmation of Election ceremony today at Saint Paul’s Cathedral. She took on her first act as Archbishop by taking up the Primatial Cross and giving the blessing at the end of the service.
Mullally will preach her first sermon as Archbishop of Canterbury in March.

After finding out Mullally was confirmed, we spoke to members of the public to get their reaction.
“We must have more representation from the other half of the population of females.”
Trish Martin stopped to share her thoughts.
“Good for her, I say.”
