Blues searching for improvements ahead of Paulton Rovers clash

Portland United are in action tonight against Paulton Rovers in the Southern League Division One South.

The Blues are returning to the field of play after a full week off, Storm Austen causing Saturday’s fixture against Bishops Cleeve to be postponed.

The Dorset side have surpassed expectations so far this season, their first at Step 4, after gaining promotion via the playoffs in May.

However, following a 6-0 defeat against Melksham Town last week, assistant manager Josh Hickman says that the extended break came at a good time for the team.

“Having played seven games in 22 days, it’s been a demanding period both physically and mentally. Our style of play requires a lot of intensity, mobility and physical output, so the break has given the lads a valuable opportunity to recover, recharge and prepare properly.”

The lack of fixture over the weekend will give the squad a boost in terms of returning players, Portland have suffered a string of injuries so far this season, with star forward Remus Nixon struggling to remain consistently available for the club alongside others.

The Blues have had a tumultuous run of games, a 4-1 victory against Tiverton Town and a 3-2 win over Exmouth Town have been sandwiched by a 6-0 and 4-0 loss. Portland are just eight points off the bottom of the table, while also being equally the same distance adrift from fourth place. Hickman echoed just how competitive the league is, and that anyone can beat anyone.

“We feel that when we meet our standards, we can compete with any team at this level, but equally when we fall below those standards, we will be punished. Results elsewhere have also highlighted just how competitive the league is, which motivates us to approach every game with the right mentality and intensity.”

Looking ahead to tonight’s game, the Blues will be looking to get back to winning ways. Hickman is looking for a battling performance from his players.

“We want to play with high intensity both in and out of possession, with willing runners to press and increase turnovers. In possession, we want to support our attacks with forward runs and maintain intensity in our play, while showing the quality and confidence we know we have on the ball.”

Regaining momentum will be important, as they are set to make the short trip off the island and to Dorchester Town, for their second Dorset derby of the season.

The Blues welcome Paulton Rovers to the Camp and Satherley Stadium, with kick off at 7.45pm.
