Conservatives continue to make gains from Labour

The Conservatives have gained Peterborough, Wrexham and Vale of Clwyd from Labour, marking further large swings to the Conservatives.

Peterborough was won as recently as 2019 in a by-election, with Lisa Forbes keeping the seat red.

However, the Brexit Party’s share of the vote,  a second placed finish in the seat with 9,801 votes, was handed over to the Conservatives, with the Brexit Party vote being reduced by 7674.

This swing saw the Conservatives emerge victorious by 2599 votes, meaning another loss for Labour.

In North Wales, it was a similar story, with the Conservatives winning Wrexham for the first time in history.

Wrexham, Labour since 1935, has given away to Sarah Atherton and the Tory party. Atherton becomes the first ever female Tory MP in Wales, enjoying a majority of 16.3%.

The Vale of Clywd also swung from Labour to Conservative, with Chris Ruane losing the seat for the second time. Tory candidate James Davies, who won the seat in 2015, will return to parliament after winning with a majority of 4.9%.
