Miss Dorset helping save Australia’s wildfire

AUB Fashion Student and current Miss Dorset, Alina Green, has set up a group in Dorset to help animals in Australia.

This follows the devastating bushfires that swept across the country throughout the start of January.

Miss Green spoke to Buzz News about the new group and told us: “I’m the current Miss Dorset, I’ve got a responsibility to take on charities and causes to help out as best as I can.

“The bushfires in Australia have been affecting animals and I saw people were creating pouches to help the animals.

“I do fashion design so I know how to sew, how to source fabrics and how to use a sewing machine.

“I set up a group so I could get people together who are interested in helping these animals so we can create pouches, teach people that don’t know how to sew and give people the opportunity to help out instead of just donating money.

“A lot of people don’t like donating money because they don’t know where their money is going.”

Arts and Crafts store, Seahorse Quilting, has donated scrap fabric to the group in preparation of their first meeting this weekend.

“There is 32 people in the group so far, even if only five of us turn up, we can still create 10/15 pouches which isn’t a lot, but people all over the country and over the world are already doing this so any little bit helps.

“By the 25^th January we need to have ours in and counted at the hubs because there’s so much interest in making these pouches.

“Other people are knitting nests for the injured birds. It’s all being sent in, where there’s then a stock count and a process of seeing what is still needed.”
