Lewis Hamilton has taken his 88th career victory in Formula One after leading every lap of the Spanish Grand Prix.
The result means 35 year old Hamilton has broken Michael Schumacher’s record of 155 podiums, as he achieved his 156th today.
The Brit pulled away from second placed Max Verstappen of Red Bull and his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas. Hamilton however did miss out on his seventh race Grand Slam: pole, fastest lap, and leading every lap after on the final lap of the race Bottas set the timings sheet alight with the fastest lap for the extra point.
The start is vital at Catalunya with the 600m run down to turn one so a good start really boosts your chances of a good result, and of course Hamilton got away well from pole position.
Bottas didn’t quite have the same fortune, as he dropped back from second place behind Verstappen.
With Hamilton, Verstappen and Bottas out in front it left the rest of the pack to battle it out for fourth place.
The main battle was between the Racing Point teammates of Lance Stroll and Sergio Perez with Stroll coming out on top after Sergio Perez was handed a five second time penalty following ignoring blue flags. A fourth and fifth place finish in this race is Racing Point’s best finish this season.
Daniil Kvyat of Alpha Tauri was also handed a five second for ignoring blue flags.
Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) was the only retirement from this race after his engine cut out coming into the chicane leading onto the start finish straight – Leclerc got his car going once again but just a few laps later retired from the race. Leclerc’s teammate Sebastian Vettel did however manage to finish in a very respectable seventh place earning some valuable points for his championship tally.
