Dolphins win goal fest in Yate whilst Poppies run ends

Poole Town FC won 6-2 at Yate Town to continue their unbeaten run to the start of the 2020/21 season league campaign.

After going an early goal behind, the Dolphins managed to take a 3-1 lead in at the break thanks to a goal from Josh Carmichael,  and a brace for Corby Moore.

Jake Smeeton came back into the side after being on the bench for last week’s 1-0 win over Hendon, and he became assister for Moore’s second goal when he played a precise through ball for the midfielder to hit sweetly from 25 yards in the bottom left corner.

Before the match Tommy Killick’s men were unbeaten across their first five league encounters, having won four of them and picking up a draw at third placed Salisbury.

The away side continued showing their quality throughout the second half, and scored their fourth goal through defender Will Spetch early on who’s free header from a Ben Greenwood cross was too much for the home keeper.

Poole hit their fifth into the net on the hour mark when a Luke Burbridge cross found Tony Lee at the back post who slotted in a simple finish.

Just two minutes later when Yate’s Ryan Beckinsale hit an absolute stunner from outside the area to get the hosts a goal back.

Poole keeper Mark Childs got a glove onto the ball but could not keep the venomous shot out of his net.

But Poole were not going to let the goal get in their way to a comfortable victory, and they made it 6-2 when substitute Dave Jerrard struck into the empty Yate Town net after AFC Bournemouth loanee Greenwood played it around the keeper.

Speaking to the club’s Twitter, manager Tommy Killick was pleased with his side’s performance and the support from the travelling fans.

He said: “There were just some really good individual performances and clearly when you have that you can end up being quite powerful.

“Smeeton came into centre midfield and I thought he was immense, and so was young Ben (Greenwood).

“Fair play to our supports at the moment. They are really backing the players and it is paying off.”

Poole still sit second on the Southern Premier South, with a game in hand on leader’s Taunton who hold a two point lead.

It was not as great fortune for Wessex Premier side Bournemouth Poppies this weekend however, when their run of form came to an end in Portsmouth.

They lost 3-0 away at Baffins Milton Rovers after coming into the game with a four game unbeaten streak that included a 2-0 away victory at Christchurch in the week.

Goals from Josh Warren, Tommy Scutt and Blu Boam saw Baffins take the three points.

Poppies sit in in 11th and will next travel to 13th placed Tadley Cavella on Tuesday night.

Poole will host 9th placed Gosport Borough at the Black Gold Stadium on Tuesday.
