Poole Town FC forward Tony Lee sealed all three points against Gosport Borough with a venomous strike to send the Dolphins top of the Southern Premier League South.
The win sees Tommy Killick’s men extend their unbeaten start to the season to seven games.
Lee, the eventual match winner, missed an early one on one chance for Poole Town after a lively start to the game which saw both sides create several chances.
Poole were pressed well by Gosport which lead to many untidy passages of play and a number of dangerous counter attacks lead by two of Gosport’s most dangerous players Bradley Tarbuck and Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Two long stoppages in the first half managed to kill the momentum of the game and neither team were able to get into a steady rhythm which ultimately typified the rest of the first half.
After early pressure from Gosport at the start of the second, a neat one two from Bournemouth loanee Luke Pardoe sparked the game to life with his effort well saved by Borough keeper Pat O’Flaherty at his near post.
With 63 minutes gone Tony Lee was the man to break the deadlock with his thunderous strike from 25 yards out.
The goal ultimately came from nothing but once it fell for Lee on the edge of the area, he blasted the ball off the underside of the crossbar and into the top corner leaving O’Flaherty with no hope.
Lee found himself one on one again shortly after, but the goal scorer couldn’t repeat what he’d done just moments before and fired well wide.
Gosport showed some fight towards the end of the game, throwing everything at it, but with some strong defending by the Poole backline led by Will Spetch, the away side rarely threatened.
The match marked Spetch’s 400th game in a Dolphins shirt, since the 29 year old first appeared for the club over a decade ago.
Poole held on for a narrow 1-0 victory which on the balance of the game they will be more than happy with.
With six wins from seven games, and maintaining an unbeaten record, the Dolphins now sit top of the league, leapfrogging now second placed Tiverton Town.
Tommy Killick’s men travel to the Devon side next Tuesday night for their next Southern Premier encounter, which will require Poole to be at a high level for the top of the table clash.
Saturday sees the Dolphins travel to Hartley Witney for the FA Trophy First Qualifying Round.
