The spread of Covid-19 in the UK ensured student nurses had to make the step up to the front lines, in order to help battle the virus.
However whilst working on the front line, many students exams and essays were cancelled as they undertook their respective placements.
Student mental health nurse Poppy Harris said: “The focus was definitely on placements, especially when the emergency standards were announced in April to May 2020.
“I was lucky that my university amended their course so it meant we had fewer assignments and no exams, but even so, there is still not enough time some days to fit in theory and assignments as well as being at placement for 30 hours a week.
“It was hard to watch people who were poorly from Covid-19 also suffering from a psychiatric illness, as students we do not qualify for the death in service compensation that would go to our families in that time of need, if we were to unfortunately catch Covid and pass away from it.
“We were on the floor facing acutely unwell people with a Covid outbreak; without the same protection as those who work in the NHS.”
