It’s looking more and more likely that Russia could invade Ukraine as Russian President Vladimir Putin looks to return Russia to what it looked like 30 years ago – before the Soviet Union collapsed. This comes despite the sanctions being threatened by the USA and the UK.
Andrew Turisz, a student originally from Ukraine, believes Russia will enter Ukraine “if they want to”.
He said: “Russia has been pouring all their money into their military and since 2014 allies have been financing weapons in Ukraine. Our army has improved but I don’t think it will protect us from Russian troops.”
Asked if Ukraine could do anything to slow or stop Russia from entering, Andrew replied: “It’s all up to Russia, I don’t think they want to annexe all of the territory in Ukraine. What they are going for is to gain concessions from Ukrainians.
“Russia is Putin because he is controlling everything”.
A Russian invasion on Ukraine will have both long term and short term effects. For Andrew it’s “hard to predict but I think Ukraine can survive…but it would be partitioned”.
When asked if he thought there would be a war if Russia were to invade Ukraine he said:
“There would be war if Russia invaded Ukraine. The diplomats have been saying that they wouldn’t concede or back down if Russians were attacking because there is nowhere to run away as it is our land.”
Andrew still has family living in Ukraine and is worried if Russia were to enter. He said: “Russia is much stronger, I can’t know for sure, so I’m worried yes.”
