AFC Bournemouth Women win yet another game, carrying on their impressive win streak in the league. The Cherries won against the Magpies in an impressive away win.
AFC Bournemouth Women’s team travelled to the 1878 stadium in Burnham where they beat Maidenhead 3-0 in the Division One South West clash.
The victory saw AFCB Women pick up their tenth success win, as well as completing the double over the Magpies this season. Last Sunday was a successful day for the club all-round as Andoni Iraola’s men’s team beat Newcastle at St James’ Park too.
Katie James scored the only goal of the first half and both Gemma McGuinness and Amber Treweek’s goals came after the break. The three different goal scorers helped the Cherries continue their 100 per cent winning record in the league.
James’ tenth goal of the season came in the 27th minute, manager Steve Cuss declared: “James’s free kick was as good as you’ll see anywhere. To be able to have that technical ability to hit it over the top of the wall and into the top corner. It was a great goal”.
He continued speaking about the quality of goals scored within the club, saying: “We’ve been really pleased with the goals that we scored, and the amount of goals that we scored. I thought they were, there were three really good goals that we scored…we were absolutely delighted with the goals yesterday, and I think we needed them”.
Cuss admitted he was initially worried about what his team might look like on the pitch after being out of action for a period of time. With this in mind, he was impressed with how his side coped.
“It’s obviously been over a month since our last game, and as a coach, you always a little bit anxious about what that might do to the team after we’ve been performing so well. So, for us to come back and really carry on from where we left off”.
Steve Cuss and Helen Bleazard spoke to our reporter Zach Sampson:
The Cherries side also saw the return of Helen Bleazard who was sidelined for 351 days due to an ankle injury. Steve Cuss was more than happy to see her return, stating: “I think it’s been a really tough year for her personally. Obviously, when you get an injury, it’s never easy, but what she thought would be a fairly minor injury out for perhaps six to eight weeks ended up being a whole year with an operation and injections later.
“She’s worked exceptionally hard, and she’s worked hard with the medical team as well. It was a really nice moment to get her back out on the pitch. She’d been training with the squad for the last couple of months, non-contact, and then contact. To get back out on the pitch, it’s, it’s really good news for us as a squad as well”.
A 60th minute substitution witnessed new loan signing Eloise Hall getting some minutes. The Cherries manager has been happy with how she has settled into the squad. As well as what she can bring to the team going forward.
“We’re absolutely delighted with Eloise. She’s come in on loan, and she’s settled in really well with the squad. In terms of training and been eager to play. For her to come on and make her debut off when it was a bright 30 minutes from her. To show glimpses of what she’s all about, with high energy. She got on the end of a couple of crosses and was close to scoring on a couple of occasions as well”.
Goalkeeper Erin Foley continued an impressive run of seven consecutive clean sheets for the team. Which is yet another impressive stat amongst the squad of players over in the Bournemouth Women’s set up.
The Cherries next fixture is at home against Manchester United’s U21s this Sunday. Where they hope to keep extending their impressive records individually and as a team.
