AFC Bournemouth’s development squad fell to a 3-1 defeat against Brentford in the Premier League Cup at Wimborne Town’s Wyatt Homes Stadium.
Goals from Brentford’s Iwan Morgan and a brace from Kyreece Lisbie saw the young Cherries sercombe to a fourth Premier League Cup defeat, a result that keeps them rooted to the foot of the table.
The first half started well for Bournemouth with Klan Tydemam hitting the post inside the first fives minutes.
Brentford took the lead through Morgan, who curled his shot into the bottom right corner, with keeper Callan McKenna getting a glove to it but not enough to keep it out.
It was a quiet end to the half and the Bees went in with a 1-0 lead.
Brentford doubled their lead early in the second half when striker, Kyreece Lisbie, capitalised on a goalkeeper fumble from a Morgan shot on the edge of the box, tapping in for 2-0.
Lisbie got his second of the night in the 72nd minute after showing good feet to work the shooting position and hammering his shot into the roof of the net.
The Cherries did get on the scoresheet towards the end of the match, Kobel Moore saw his strike go in off the post to claw back what proved to be only a consolation goal.
Despite availability problems with academy players with the first team, injuries, and players on loan, Bournemouth manager, Alan Connell, maintained that the game offered a good opportunity for his team.
“We experienced a very difficult game that we knew we would having played Brentford so often. Obviously we’re a little bit light at the moment, which is great in regards to stretching individuals, players playing up and getting to play against this quality of opposition.”
“We’re here to support the first team, I don’t want to create good under 21 players, I want to create good players for our first team or if not eventually the football league, so this is just part of the journey for where we hope our players will end up.”
