Young sailor Cameron Sword has branded the proposed incinerator at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy as “detrimental” for everyone who lives in the area.
This comes after the incinerator was granted planning permission by the Government, but is still awaiting a permit from the Environment Agency.
With the proposal of burning plastics so close to the Sailing Academy, Sword questioned the effects that it would have on the athletes:
“How can athletes be at their peak physical health when they’re spending their time training in an environment that is not healthy?
“Having those facilities down there are helpful for all of us, with the tourism and what the sailing community brings, they’re going to lose that if this goes ahead”.
A passion for this matter is clear through Sword’s sponsorship from company ‘4Ocean’, a company that sells products made entirely from recycled plastic from the ocean.
The sailor from Surrey shared why a company like this is needed to better the environment:
“When you walk down the beaches these days, what’s meant to be this beautiful scenery of being by the seaside is being absolutely ruined by plastics and pollution.
“It’s a massive cause at the moment, and I’m working really closely with them to raise awareness on how detrimental plastics can be to the world.”
Questions will be answered soon as a public meeting will be held on the 6th February to update people on the campaigns against the incinerator.
