Extinction Rebellion holding climate change march in Poole

Extinction Rebellion (XR) and other activist groups will march through Poole tomorrow to “raise awareness of issues related to climate justice”.

The march will begin at midday in Poole Park and will finish at Poole Quay.

Speeches and rallies are planned to criticise the towns colonial past and will feature “placards, leaflets and banners” promoting animal and human rights.

The march will also see XR scrutinise animal exploration and celebrate Black History Month for the first time.

Daniel Glennon,53, a spokesperson for XR BCP, explained to Buzz how Black History Month and colonialism interlinks with the present climate emergency.

“Colonialism is the source of the climate crisis-rich countries exploiting Global South countries resources for profit.  The burning of fossil fuels plundered from these countries has fuelled climate breakdown.”

As well as attempting to increase diversity within the group, celebrating Black History Month allows XR to “make our group more intersectional”.

Glennon also revealed how climate change has damaged the local area.

“We experienced a prolonged dry spell this spring and summer that caused the pond in Queens Park – an important local spot – dry up completely”.

This resulted in species such as ducks, herons and more to lose their immediate water source, effecting the local ecosystems.

With the local green areas having been drier over the hotter months, local wildlife was more vulnerable, which Glennon is fully aware of.

“We are also seeing increasingly intense and frequent wildfires which can have a devastating effect on our heathland habit.”

Additional groups set to attend include Stand Up to Racism, Greenpeace and the Green Party.
