The government has come to a decision to scrap Police and Crime Commissioners in England and Wales, which looks to save parliament £100 million in the next term.
In 2012, Police and Crime Commissioners were introduced under the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011.
In the current system, there are 37 elected commissioners, who were elected to improve police accountability. Responsibilities of a PPC include, producing a policing plan, setting an annual budget and appointing chief constables.
Dorset’s PCC, David Sidwick, was elected as a Conservative Party candidate in 2021.
Liberal Democrat councillor Marcus Andrews said: “I’m supportive of the abolishment as a Liberal Democrat Councillor.”
He also added: “We’ve had county police forces for a hundred plus years without this extra tier of bureaucracy.”
Buzz approached all labour councillors in the BCP for comment, unfortunately all were unreachable.
