AFC Bournemouth had to settle for just one point on Monday Night as they drew 1-1 with Brighton.

An early penalty scored by Marcus Tavernier had the Cherries ahead until a 91st minute overhead kick by Kostoulas earned the hosts a point.

Andoni Iraola’s options were limited when naming his squad due to multiple injuries. Four academy players were given a place in the 20 man squad.

One of them being Poole born Charlie Stevens, who was playing in the seventh tier of English football this time last year.

The hosts started the better of the two sides: creating dangerous chances for the Cherries to deal with.

From the 10th minute, it would be Iraola’s men who would control the rest of the half.

In the 25th minute, Marcus Tavernier carried the ball from his own half to the opposition penalty box after a poorly taken Brighton corner.

Tavernier crossed the ball into Adli who was brought down by Bart Verbruggen. Originally called as simulation by the referee; VAR soon overturned the decision to award a penalty.

Tavernier stepped up and placed the ball into the bottom right corner beating Verbruggen.

The second half was dominated by the hosts with the Cherries not having a single shot on target and only three touches in the opposition box.

Kaoru Mitoma came close to equalising for the hosts with a curling effort from long range. His shot just curled wide of the post which didn’t trouble Petrovic.

Amine Adli and Tavernier were brought off with cramp issues whilst other Cherries’ players looked highly fatigued.

Brighton on the other hand made a triple substitution in the 66th minute. Georginio Rutter, Carlos Baleba and Yankuba Minteh all coming on for the Seagulls who are regular starters.

Alex Jimenez and James Hill impressed in what was a seemingly immovable Cherries backline with three points in touching distance.

However, in the 91st minute, 18-year-old Kostoulas scored a spectacular overhead kick which left Cherries goalkeeper Djorde Petrovic rooted to his spot.

The Greek international gained great height with his leap as he struck his effort into the top left corner.

The result leaves the Cherries 15th in the Premier League table. They sit ten points above the relegation zone and  seven points off the top six.

There is no time to rest as Andoni Iraola and his team prepare to host Liverpool at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday.
