Hampshire Cricket wonderkid Ben Mayes made a sensational 65-ball century, breaking the record for the fastest ever England under 19s ODI hundred and the highest individual score for England in a Youth ODI, as England under 19s put Scotland to the sword at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup.
The 18-year-old made a scintillating 191 off of just 117 balls, hitting 18 fours and eight sixes at a strike rate of 163.25, to propel England to score of 404-6 off their 50 overs, setting Scotland a target of 405 to win.
The Southampton born batsman previously made scores of 20 and an unbeaten 77 in the Young Lions’ wins over Pakistan and Zimbabwe, excelling at number three in the batting order.
Mayes signed his first professional contract with Hampshire in July 2025, and burst onto the scene swiftly with a half century on professional debut in the One Day Cup against Glamorgan, scoring 74 off 55 balls at the age of just 17, before making his T20 debut a month later in the Vitality Blast against Durham.
He played an important role in Hampshire’s run to the final of the 2025 Metro Bank One Day Cup, with an 89 run partnership with England international Liam Dawson crucial to their semi-final victory over Yorkshire by just eight runs. He also featured in the final of the Vitality Blast where Hampshire were defeated by Somerset.
Mayes has been with Hampshire since under 14 level, making his debut for the academy in May 2023. He made his youth international debut for England in September 2024 and made two half centuries against India under 19s in the summer of 2025.
Victories against Pakistan and Zimbabwe in England’s opening two games have already ensured a place in the Super Six stage of the tournament, where England were knocked out in the 2024 instalment of the Under 19 Cricket World Cup.
England approached today’s fixture knowing progression was already secure, and with the knowledge that the now near inevitable victory over Scotland would secure top spot in Group C.
